Timing of Treatment

Starting orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient.  Different factors come into play such as patients age and amount of primary teeth still present.  During the initial consultation the appropriate timing of treatment will be determined based on the patients specific needs.

Phase I “interceptive treatment” may begin while primary teeth are still present.  This treatment typically occurs in younger patients to help correct a dental and/or orthopedic condition and only top braces and/or an appliance is placed.  In most cases Phase I treatment doesn’t eliminate the need for further treatment also known as Phase II after permanent teeth have erupted.

Phase II “comprehensive treatment” is when full braces are used to adjust the position of permanent teeth to develop a proper bite and enhance facial esthetics.  This phase usually starts after all primary teeth have been lost but this is not always necessary and will be determined during the initial consultation.
