At some point, you’ve likely explored the world of orthodontic treatment, researching the different types of appliances—metal braces, clear braces, and Invisalign. With so much information online, deciding between clear aligners and braces can feel overwhelming.
The good news is that there’s no wrong answer. It all comes down to how the treatment fits your lifestyle, needs, and smile goals. To help you make an informed decision, Dr. Kovacs of Kovacs Orthodontics has put together this helpful guide on the pros and cons of choosing between Invisalign or braces.
Appearance and Style
Modern orthodontics has come a long way, and metal braces are no longer the bulky appliances they once were. Today’s metal braces feature stainless steel brackets and archwires held together by colorful elastic ligatures that add a bit of personality to your smile. These braces are much sleeker than the braces of the past, but they are still the most noticeable option.
Clear braces or Invisalign may be better choices for teens or professionals who prefer a more subtle look. Clear braces are made from polycrystalline ceramic, which allows them to blend with the natural color of your teeth. Invisalign clear aligners are the most discreet option, made from a nearly invisible thermoplastic material. Both clear braces and Invisalign allow you to go about your daily life with minimal attention drawn to your orthodontic treatment.
Treatment Process
When you visit Dr. Kovacs and the rest of our team at our Billings or Miles City office for your consultation, we’ll create a 3D model of your smile and develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan will include the estimated treatment duration, cost breakdown, and payment options.
We’ll attach brackets to your teeth for metal or clear braces, thread an archwire through the brackets, and secure everything with elastic ligatures. Orthodontic bands or other components may also be added to address specific bite issues if needed. Braces require periodic adjustments, typically every four to six weeks, to ensure your teeth are moving correctly.
With Invisalign, we’ll create custom aligners based on your 3D smile model. There’s no need for adjustments or tightening; you simply switch to a new aligner every two weeks. However, Dr. Kovacs recommends checking in with us every four to six weeks to monitor your progress.
Treatment Effectiveness and Duration
Metal braces are a powerful and precise treatment option, capable of correcting even the most severe cases of malocclusion. The elastic ligatures and metal components deliver consistent pressure to straighten teeth. Depending on the complexity of your case, metal braces typically take one to two years to complete treatment.
Clear braces work similarly to metal braces but are better suited for mild to moderate cases. Because ceramic brackets exert gentler pressure, the treatment may take slightly longer—between one and three years.
Invisalign is an excellent choice for patients with mild to moderate malocclusion. Treatment times vary but typically range from nine to 18 months. Since the aligners are custom-made, some patients may see results in as little as six months, while others may need up to 1.5 years to complete treatment.
Removability and Maintenance
Metal and clear braces are bonded to your teeth, which means they cannot be removed until the end of treatment. Because of this, certain foods—like nuts, gum, and hard or sticky items—should be avoided to prevent damage to your braces. Soft foods such as pasta, soups, and sliced fruits or vegetables are easier and more comfortable to eat with braces.
Maintaining oral hygiene with braces requires extra effort. You’ll need to brush carefully around the brackets and wires and use an interdental brush to clean between your teeth. For those with clear braces, reducing the intake of staining foods and drinks like coffee and tea is important to keep the ceramic brackets from discoloring.
Invisalign offers more flexibility. Since the aligners are removable, you can enjoy all your favorite foods without restrictions. Simply remove your aligners before eating and drinking (other than water) and brush your teeth before putting them back in.
Maintaining oral hygiene with Invisalign is straightforward. Brush and floss your teeth as usual, and clean your aligners by rinsing them after meals and soaking them in a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide once a day.
